The walks through our local countryside take us through footpaths with corn growing on either side. Amongst the crops are thousands of poppies. The combination of them both are stunning, especially when the sun makes the corn look golden in colour in contrast to the bright red poppies. It is also a natural hiding place for field mice. Poppies were associated with cornfields in ancient times. Ceres, Roman goddess of corn, was depicted wearing a wreath of field poppies. The field poppy is a well-known symbol of Remembrance Day; it was growing on the fields of Flanders after the battles of the First World War. The poppy was chosen by Essex as its county emblem.
