My love of the Minack Chronicles written by Derek Tangye inspired the painting of this shoe. His series of over 20 autobiographical books tells how he and his wife Jean Nicol turned their backs on a glittering, socialite lifestyle in 1940s London and went to set up a flower farm on the cliffs of West Cornwall. The remote, unspoilt land which they bought is now a Nature Reserve and "a place for solitude", where those seeking peace and tranquillity may wander to enjoy the beauties of the coastal scenery. Both Merlin and Susie, the two donkeys, were relinquished to the Donkey Sanctuary on the death of Derek Tangye in 1996. Sadly, Merlin passed away in March 2005.
