| I was asked by a local farrier who saw some of my painted horseshoes if I could paint one for his daughter. "She's seriously into black and white" he said. And added "Can you add the horse's name too?" No problem I said before I found out that his daughter preferred the 'stable name' of her horse rather than its short name of Indie! That night I sat at home and searched the Web to find out about Indian paint. Not only is it the name of an American plant, Indian paint is a breed of horse used chiefly by the American Indians. The main colour of these horses is black and white. There's my inspiration! The white/black feathers painted on the shoe are those of the snowy owl which the Indians used as decoration or as smudging feathers (also known as fanning feathers). The real feathers are those of the male mallard duck. I found these while we were walking along the Stour river at Dedham in the summer of 2004. |
